Pull Up a Chair: A Seated Perspective

The phrase “pull up a chair” has always been viewed as an invitation—an open gesture to sit down and engage in conversation. In this project, "Pull Up a Chair; A Seated Perspective," the goal is to initiate dialogue between the artist and the viewer. Each chair serves as a visual starting point, addressing a topic or theme from the artist’s perspective. The conversation continues as viewers respond, offering their interpretations and insights.

These chairs spark discussions on themes that resonate deeply within our communities—topics such as religion, social challenges, family dynamics, gender, economic status, and health as well as access. By exploring these subjects through both visual art and verbal exchange, this interaction seeks to cultivate mutual understanding and foster an appreciation for diverse perspectives.

The conversation doesn’t end with the artwork; it evolves as we listen to and reflect on one another’s viewpoints.

Safe Space A Poem by James Crews

When there is nowhere you feel safe, and you think that goodness has gone extinct; when the world seems cold as a snowed-in car that won’t start anymore—step inside this poem. Find solace in the spaces between each line, breathe peace in the pause between words. Let no one ever say you don’t belong here— you were born, you’re alive, you exist: take this as proof that you too are loved. Say this to yourself until it is true: May I be safe, may all beings on this planet be safe. And feel how a small fire kindles in your chest, spreading to the bundle of tinder that is your heart, still humming its tireless, ancient hymn: I am, I am, I am.
